Robert Wesley Amick (1879-1970)
Robert Wesley Amick was born in Canon City, Colorado in 1879 and died in 1970. He was an illustrator of Western subjects, painter, printmaker, commercial artist, and teacher. Amick was born in a log cabin and grew up in the Colorado cattle country during the 1880's when the scene around him included the cowboy, the prospector, Ute and Sioux Indians, and the homesteader. Amick was educated in Canon City public schools and at Yale where he earned a law degree while also taking art courses. After practicing law in Ohio for two years, he gave up law for art study with private teachers and at the Art Students League in New York City. As an illustrator, he did commissions for Harper's, Scribner's, and The American.
