Meadowlark Gallery: The Artist Biographies

Hugh Hockaday (1892-1968)

He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1892 and died in Lakeside, Montana in 1968. Hugh Hockaday began his career at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, graduating in 1924. Commercial art was his primary area for the next twenty six years. He and his staff of five studio artists created displays for the Scruggs-Vandervoorter and Barney department store. Every summer he would return to Montana to his father's Peaceful Valley Ranch on Angel Point on Flathead Lake. In 1946, Hockaday came home to stay and managed the ranch and sweet cherry orchard. After years of making animated displays for such stores as the Icewater Drug Store in Wall, South Dakota, he began his art career. Full time painting included landscapes and portraits in watercolor.
