Thomas B. Madsen (1965-2008)

My commentary only as I am sure there could be folks who would contradict me about my knowledge of Tom. But I was privileged to know him directly for about three years or so. His uncles introduced me briefly in the mid-1990's but because they were a handful themselves, Tom was just on the sidelines watching all of the events. glt

Thomas Benjamin Madsen died from a sudden illness on June 19, 2008 at the age of 42. He was born in Great Falls, Montana on November 27, 1965 to Rod Madsen and Ann Madsen Mobley. He grew up primarily on ranches in Ennis and Roberts, Montana. He graduated Valedictorian of Roberts High School in 1984, and started college at U of M. Some of his fondest memories were during his college years of guiding backcountry hunts up the Stillwater and other remote areas.

While guiding in Red Lodge, Tom met Bernadette Leonard and they were married in Bozeman on October 13, 1990. Tom graduated from MSU with a range science degree in spring of 1992, and began his career as a Range Conservationist for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Their son Benjamin was born there in 1994. Tom couldn’t have been a happier father. Because of his love for the land and his will to protect it, Tom pursued a career in law enforcement and was soon a Ranger for the BLM in Casper, Wyoming. Their daughter Kate was born there in 1997, and soon had him wrapped around her finger. He and his family moved from Casper to Lewistown, to Anchorage, to Boise, and finally “home” to Billings following his law enforcement career as a Special Agent for the BLM.

I’m sure he would say that Alaska was his favorite place - fishing with his kids, and his best dog Jake on Bonnie Lake. He had a great love for the outdoors - fishing, hiking hunting, shooting and horseback riding. But he loved nothing more than his family and friends. He was an exemplary father, husband, son and friend.

Memorial Services for Tom will be 10 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2008 at Dahl Funeral Chapel in Billings. A celebration of Tom’s life will follow at the Billings Hotel, 1223 Mullowney Ln. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at www.dahlfuneralchapel.com.
