Meadowlark Gallery: The Artist Biographies

Conrad Schwiering (1916-1986)

Conrad Schwiering was born in Boulder, Colorado in 1916. "Maybe I've painted the Tetons a thousand times, maybe two thousand. It's been a lifetime." When he was seven he started drawing horses but his father suggested studying business at the University of Wyoming. Summers were given to art classes in Denver, Colorado; Laramie, Wyoming; and Taos, New Mexico. After he graduated, he decided to paint full time and attended the Art Students League in New York City. In 1941, he returned to Laramie, served in World War II, and then moved to Jackson to paint the mountains and remained there until his death in 1986.
