David A. Maass (1929- )

David A. Maass was born on November 27, 1929, in Rochester, Minnesota. After graduating from high school, he accepted a position with a leading manufacturer of high school and college jewelry. He started in the tool and die department but a year and a half later was transferred to the art department where he ultimately became art director. In 1952, he joined the Marines and was stationed in San Diego. While in California, he and David Hagerbaumer became close friends. When his two year hitch in the Marines was up, he headed back to Minnesota. In 1974, he was selected the Ducks Unlimited Artist of the Year and also had the winning design for the 1974 and 1982 Federal Duck Stamp Designs as well.
