Ross Stefan (1934-1999)
Ross Stefan was born on June 13, 1934 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and resided in Tucson, Arizona. At the age of thirteen, he won a student art contest and later that year was taken to southern Arizona to recuperate from pneumonia. In 1950, the family moved to Tucson where Stefan exhibited pastels. He switched to oil painting at the age of eighteen, graduating from the University of Arizona in 1955, and established his first studio in Tubac, Arizona. He stayed with the Navajos during that year and his paintings of the land and the people became authoritative. Ross Stefan passed away on January 10, 1999 in Tucson, Arizona.
